We’re looking for a Group Legal Counsel  supporting the pawaPay group, most particularly in our West and Central African Cluster to help us achieve that future. Within our West and Central African (WCA) cluster we have growing operations in Ghana, Cameroon, Benin, Senegal, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Sierra Leone and additional markets.

What is the role?

Reporting to our Group Head of Legal your responsibilities shall include:

  • Managing assigned legal matters, including drafting, reviewing, and advising the business on key agreements with customers, electronic money issuers, data privacy/hosting policies, foreign exchange, loan agreements, and other operational documents as needed
  • Ensuring complete business fluency in both English and French, with the ability to draft and review high-quality legal documents in both languages
  • Leading contract negotiations and supporting our sales and partner success teams to close deals
  • Providing clear legal opinions on substantive legal and regulatory issues
  • Assisting Group Head of Legal with payment service provider licence applications
  • Identifying, monitoring, and managing legal risks affecting the businesses and advising on the impact of these risks and measures to mitigate them
  • Ensuring the business has an up-to-date and accurate understanding of the laws and regulations in the jurisdictions in which we operate
  • Support company secretarial matters for businesses in West & Central Africa as required
  • Identifying and engaging with trusted local counsel in each market to advise on business issues as they arise
  • Embedding awareness of legal risk management and corporate policy issues to the wider organisation
  • Performing any other duties within the scope of the role, as requested, including additional working hours when required. 

You are a perfect fit if you have

  • Legally qualified and currently practising in a country within the West and Central Africa (WCA) region, with broad familiarity across multiple WCA legal systems and a solid working knowledge of English law
  • 6+ years legal practice experience, preferably from a top-tier law firm in WCA or within a fintech environment
  • Strong communication skills in both English and French (written and verbal), with excellent attention to detail
  • Proven experience in preparing licence applications for payment service providers
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate corporate environments, with the energy and flexibility to work in a startup environment
  • Highly organised and process-oriented
  • Skilled in project management capable of handling several deliverables at a time
  • Reliable, independent, and able to juggle multiple tasks effectively
  • Calm and effective under pressure
  • Exceptionally diligent and proud of your output in all aspects of work
  • Proficient in G Suite tools, including Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Calendar
  • Comfortable working in a remote environment that values autonomy and responsibility
  • Passionate, driven, and collaborative, with a willingness to work with an ambitious international team
  • Willing to travel as required.
