PawaPay has strengthened its regulatory presence in Kenya, with group company Quidexplus Kenya Limited receiving authorisation from the Central Bank of Kenya to provide Payment Gateway services to receive, process and settle payments on behalf of merchants.

Building in one of the world's most established mobile money markets

Kenya has played a defining role in the development of mobile money and remains one of its most established markets.

What started as a way for people to send and receive money has become part of the country's everyday financial infrastructure, supporting payments between consumers, businesses and financial institutions.

According to the GSMA's 2026 State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money, more than $2 trillion flowed through mobile money accounts globally in 2025, with the industry reaching 2.3 billion registered accounts and 593 million monthly active accounts. Most of the growth in registered and active accounts came from Sub-Saharan Africa.

For PawaPay, the authorisation represents an important milestone in our long-term investment in Kenya and our approach to building regulated payments infrastructure across Africa.

Investing in regulated payments infrastructure

PawaPay provides businesses with a single point of access to mobile money across multiple African markets. Through one integration, PawaPay manages local payment connections, regulatory requirements, treasury and settlement, enabling businesses to access mobile money payment infrastructure across multiple markets.

David Kanyora, Regional Director - East and Southern Africa, said:

"Kenya is one of the world's most established mobile money markets, so receiving this authorisation is an important milestone for PawaPay.

It strengthens our regulated presence in Kenya and our ability to support businesses accepting mobile money payments in the market. For businesses operating across multiple African markets, Kenya can form part of the wider mobile money access we provide through PawaPay."

Building the infrastructure for mobile money across Africa

The authorisation strengthens PawaPay’s regulated presence in Kenya as we continue to invest in the infrastructure businesses need to access mobile money across African markets.
